When is aluminum foil safer than silicone paper?

Sep 10, 2025

Aluminum foil is safer than silicone-coated paper when cooking or handling certain ingredients at high temperatures.

The main reasons are as follows:

1. High Temperature Stability in High-Temperature Environments: Aluminum foil can withstand temperatures up to 660°C, far exceeding the typical temperatures of air fryers and ovens (200-250°C).

Aluminum foil is suitable for baking sweet potatoes and other high-temperature baking applications that require temperatures exceeding 230°C.

Silicone-coated paper: Most products have a maximum temperature resistance of 230-250°C. Exceeding this temperature causes the silicone oil layer to carbonize, releasing harmful substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

2. Cooking Time

Aluminum foil: Suitable for long cooking times (unless it comes in contact with acidic ingredients), suitable for long cooking times (e.g., slow-roasting meat for 3 hours).

Silicone foil: It is recommended that you use it for no more than 20 minutes at a time. Replace it if you exceed this limit, otherwise the risk of solvent residue increases.

Compatibility with Certain Ingredients Juicy/Fat-Rich Ingredients: Aluminum foil can lock in moisture (e.g., grilled chicken wings) and prevent grease from dripping and causing fire. Acidic Ingredients (lemon, tomato): Silicone-coated paper is safer, as aluminum foil may release aluminum ions (but be mindful of solvent residue in silicone-coated paper).

Usage Recommendations

When using aluminum foil:

✅ Grilling temperatures > 230°C (e.g., sweet potatoes, high-temperature grilled meat); ✅ Meat that needs to be wrapped for a long time to retain moisture;

✅ Grease and dirt removal (reusable instead of silicone wrap).

When using aluminum foil with caution:

⚠️ Acidic ingredients (use silicone wrap or glass containers instead);

⚠️ Microwaveable (absolutely not allowed).

Aluminum foil is safer for high-temperature, long-term, and greasy baking, while silicone paper is suitable for low-temperature, short-term baking. Regardless of which you choose, be sure to check for food-grade certification (GB 4806.9-2016 for aluminum foil and GB 4806.8-2022 for silicone paper) and follow the product instructions.
